The Cuban Revolution Turns 50

On January 1, 1959, General Fulgencio Batista took the coward’s way out and deserted his troops in Cuba and Fidel Castro’s revolution began. Whatever you think about Fidel and the revolution, it’s amazing that this tiny country, so close to it’s enemy who happens to be the most powerful military force on earth, has maintained its independence for five decades. I’ve just watched part one of Steven Soderbergh’s new film CHE (starring Benecio del Toro) and it’s very well done. I can’t wait to see part two. You’ll read a lot of criticism of the film, mostly from right-wing American publications, but don’t listen to them. This is an excellent film.
